12 Days of Christmas Family Activities
Make a Gingerbread House
We’ve been making gingerbread houses with my daughter every year since she was one! This really has already become a tradition for us and she loves it. What better way to be creative AND get to eat some yummy candy, right? You can get Gingerbread House Kits a lot of places. I found this one on Amazon that I really like because it comes with four mini houses, so everyone gets to decorate their own house. This is perfect for when you have a bigger family.
Go Look at Christmas Lights
A lot of towns even have a trail of lights and the kids just love seeing all the beautiful holiday lights and decorations. I also like to go through neighborhoods. We just turn on some Christmas music and drive around. It’s a cheap, fun way to get into the Christmas spirit.
Make Christmas Cookies
My daughter has actually already been asking to do this, this year so I’ve been looking at some delicious Christmas cookie recipes. Okay, so this is like an every other night thing for my family in the month of December, BUT you could make it extra special by making some snacks and letting the kids pick out their favorite Christmas movie. Our top five favorites?

- The Santa Clause
- The Polar Express

Take Photos With Santa
This is a definite must before Christmas. I love to see my daughter’s reaction every year and how it changes as she gets older. This will be my son’s first year getting to meet Santa, so I’m pretty excited to see if he’s going to be happy or terrified! It will make for an awesome picture either way!
Read Christmas Books
If you’ve read my posts before, you know how much I believe in reading to your kids. I just think it’s a great foundation to get your kids to LOVE reading and the more you read, the better. We have a couple Christmas books, but I’d really like to get a few more. Maybe even let my daughter pick one out.
Do a Random Act of Kindness
It’s truly the season of giving and I feel like a great way of showing your kids how important that is, is taking time out to do something together for someone else. It could be anything from making a casserole for a family to donating clothes and toys to your favorite charity.
Sing Christmas Songs
Every year I like to take at least one night to sit down with my daughter and sing all of the Christmas songs that I grew up with. I love having those memories with her. Sometimes we’ll be hanging out just singing songs, being silly and laughing for hours! This is definitely one of my favorite things to do as a family. Our 5 favorite Christmas songs?
- Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer
- Jingle Bells
- Silent Night
- Santa Clause is Coming to Town
- Frosty the Snowman
Make Home Made Christmas Cards
Instead of taking family photos and doing the typical Christmas card last year, we made our own home made Christmas cards and they turned out SO CUTE! I really wish I had taken pictures, because they turned out so good. Of course, my daughter had a blast making them with all the paint, stickers and sequins. I think it was great too, because grandparents got an extra special card in the mail!
Have a Family Game Night
You can definitely customize this to play games that are age appropriate for your kids. I’m pretty excited because my daughter is finally old enough that we can start having a game night. I really want to get some of the games that I loved playing as a kid so that she can have those memories too.
Make Hot Chocolate
I’ve found a lot of great recipes lately for home made hot chocolate. They look pretty dang delicious so we are definitely going to have to try one out this year. The kids would love to help making it too. This Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate is mouth watering! Yum!
